Walk in Bathtubs – Handicapped Bathtubs

Walk in bathtubs are the bathtubs designed to let the handicapped persons to come inside the bathtubs by just walking inside it without jumping in it. These bathtubs give person a door at the side of the tub to come inside. The height of the door is usually at a low height from the ground, generally few inches above the floor.

The person who is physically handicapped can just walk in the bathtub with the help of his wheelchair and can sit on the bath seat through the door. The bath seat of the bathtub is placed near to door so that the person can be seated on it without any trouble. The bath seat is given a due height above the floor so that the handicapped person may not feel trouble in getting seated over it.

Generally it is found that walk in bathtubs are longer in height and shorter in width due to the proper height and volume considerations in the bathtub. The water height should be up to a height so that the bathing seat may be completely emerged with water and at the same time there should not be too much water wastage by the tub. Thus it is designed to such a shape in which the volume of the water used is nearly same as in normal bathtubs.

The physically handicapped persons require some facilities usually different than a normal person which help them to do all their bathing activities without creating any trouble to others. Walk in bathtubs give them the complete solution to their problems. They give them the place to do their own work independently and till the time they wish to. They give them the freedom to bath by the way they wish to, thus many a times it gives them the satisfaction of their live body.

Walk in bathtubs have generally two types of doors, one is inward opening type door while the other is outward opening type door. The inward opening door has the mechanism to open inside the bathtub. This requires the sufficient space in the bathtub to let the door open inside it, while at the same time it requires the more space for the bathtub, so that the bather can sit at the bath seat and at the same time close the door of the bathtub. Generally for making such arrangement the width of the bathtub increases, which needs a great volume of water to completely fill the bathtub.

Generally it is found that for physically handicapped persons the bathtubs of outward opening are more preferred as it does not require them to adjust before closing the door. They can directly sit at the bath seat and can close the door as per their comfort. With outward swinging door walk in bathtubs there is no requirement of the large width of the bathtubs. But the only disadvantage which increases the cost of the outward swinging door bathtubs are the proper watertight system provided at the door, as the water gets filled in the bathtub the pressure for the door to get opened also increases. Thus the cost of the bathtub increases considerably.
